So I stopped keeping a journal about the time I got married. This is all kind of sad because all the exciting things have happened after that! I got married, graduated, started residency, had Eli, lived in Hershey, had Dora, got my first real job, moved to Oregon, delivered Emmy, moved to Texas, and lots of adventures in the middle.

But, I think this blog represents a small documentation of my life's adventures. So I count this as my journal, adventures, typos, and all!

And I guess you can read it!

Thoughts on Orlando

The city not the wannabe pirate/elf.

Two day pass to Disney, $185
Three day pass to Universal Studios theme park, $145
Two week pass to Sea World and Busch Gardens $114

Disney has race cars, trains, frontier land, and expensive toys.

Sea World has killing killer whales (orcas) and dolphins, with penguins and some rides. Bush gardens is the coolest place I have been to, awesome roller coaster next to a lion and elephant.

Universal studios has spiderman, who-ville, Harry Potter, and butter beer (butterscotch cream soda).

For the fun and money, sea world/Busch gardens.

For the atmosphere Disney.

For the Butter Beer-Universal Studios!!!

It is ok to cry

So there are a couple of movies that it is ok for a man to cry during. Actually two classes of movies, to be precise. I will give examples.

Rudy. Possibly the best sports movie of all time. Nothing motivates guys like sports and this is the classic example if overcoming adversity. If you don't shed a few tears when the crowd chants "Rudy! Rudy" than there is something wrong with your lacrimal gland.

Hugo. This is a movie at the theater. If you don't cry at this move there's something wrong with you. I think it is a movie about movies, or maybe a movie about automatons. I am really not sure, maybe it was about orphans, death, or the innocence of children. It may even have been steampunk propaganda.
I watched the whole movie and still have no clue about it.

It is ok to cry because You will never get that two hours back.

Flowers

I bought Bridget flowers this week and had two epiphanies.

1. I used to give her more flowers because I used to go to the store and do the shopping, while there I would just pick up a bunch of flowers. It isn't as convenient now as it used to be. To fix that, gas stations need to have flowers by the pump, or a little stand.

2. Flowers make our whole kitchen smell wonderful! The only problem with that is that now the rest of our house smells bad in comparison. We have searched high and low and cannot find any dirty diapers.

By comparison, our house stinks compared to the flowers. My solution? Easy: get something really stinky for the kitchen, the rest of the house will smell great!

Who needs air freshener? Just make it smell so bad in one place that everything else smells better!

So I was goofing off looking at the CDC for death statistics.

I need serious help, I know.

Here is something interesting:

Deaths from Alcohol 70,000

Deaths from Cigarettes 470,000

That, I think, specifically for 2009.

So we don't need more gun control, we need more Alcohol and Tobacco control.

Parenting Fails or Successes

So my kids were behind on shots because of the move and losing our immunization record. I took them to the Health Department (because we don't have a pediatrician.)

I should let you know that before we left the house, Eli insisted on dressing himself in a shirt that Uncle Golden made that was three sizes to big with fading lettering. Dora, though dressed in a matching outfit with the baby, had spilled juice and pancake syrup down the front of her shirt. This gave the two of them a somewhat unkempt look. Eli insisted on wearing flip flops in spite of the 65 degree weather. Dora refused to let me comb her hair.

When we got to the Health Department, people politely smiled. I didn't speak Spanish so could not understand if anything was said about us. I saw three or four women with each child, and there I was, the only man with 3 kids.

They were helpful, Eli got 6 shots (he was behind) Emmy got 3. They did great, as Eli was crying I told him that we could go get a toy for being brave. I told him that I got a gift card to Target and he could pick out a toy.

I don't know if it was the fact that I was with three kids, on a weekday, and they assumed I was unemployed, or if it was the motley look of my kids, or if it was my reference to a gift card for toys, but when I want to pay, the lady at the desk looked at me, and asked for $10. When I explained I only had $8, and that I would have to go to the ATM if they did not take credit card, she pleasantly said "Oh, well $5 should cover it."

We must have looked Pathetic. I told her that I would be back in 4 weeks with repeat shots, and I would Pay extra next time. She politely smiled and said that wouldn't be necessary.

Never once did they ask what I do for work, or if my wife had a job.

Win: I got my kids up to date on shots!

Fail: I look unemployed when not in scrubs

Win: Eli and Emmy only cried for a second

We live in a pretty cool country.

Eli came down the stairs this morning and told me "both my arms are broken dad, they hurt real bad and I don't know why!?"

Sandwich Idea

Jam us basically sugar.

So if they are the same, why not just make the same sandwich with Peanutbutter Cups?

Well, we could make it a little healthier by cutting carbs, and leaving off the bread.

New idea: Peanutbutter Cups for lunch!

Bridget and I are teaching a Marriage Class for our Church.

The class is every Sunday after church, we do a potluck, it is kind of fun. Today's Lesson is on Anger Management.

I had kind of a Unique Insight into that today as Last Night was DAYLIGHT SAVINGS. While you all were getting an Extra Hour of SLEEP. I was working in the Emergency Room. On a Saturday Night. With the Computer System Down. Unfortunately I cannot share more of my fun on the internet.

This lesson might have been better if I had studied it before going into work.

Also, Marriage Classes need to have a section on "How to Handle Sleeplessness in Your Marriage". It would apply to shift workers, healthcare workers, and of course New Parents.

(I am happy how I capitalized on Capitalizing words today.)

Feel free to attend next week! I will be smoking a brisket!

Camping in the house

I used to love camping, but haven't done it in years. Last night Eli and Dora and I all set up my tent inside as a trial run to see if we were ready for the great outdoors.
Here is what happened.
Eli and Dora fought over pillows.
Dora won.
All stuffed animals had to join us.
Dora had to go potty 6 times, she was just excited to sit on the toilet.
Dora got bored and wanted stories.
We told stories for 20 minutes.
Dora wanted mom.
Dora wanted to sleep in her own bed and went upstairs.
Eli fell asleep.
Eli stole my pillow.
Eli tossed and turned kicking me in the head.
He stole my other pillow.
He woke me up for water.
He kicked me in the ribs.
He stole my pillow again.
He woke me up asking for ghost stories at 4 am.
He put his arm on my shoulder and went to sleep.
He stole my pillow.
He wanted more water.
He told a funny story.
He slept till 7. Then asked if he could tell me a story.
He is now awake and chipper.
He passed the test!

Anybody wanna go beach camping?
Bring an extra pillow.

Couple things

First of all, there is a drought here in Texas. Why is it that the only grass growing on my property is between the cracks of the concrete?

Secondly, we went to dinner tonight as a family in a restaurant that allows smoking (won't be going back). I asked the waitress which entree was good. Her words, "this one will get you addicted, you will want it again a week from now." As far as I can tell, she was right- I got enough second hand smoke I might need some nicoderm or Chantex to help me come down.

If you have ever seen them, or know someone who has them, you will soon find the web spaces on your hand becoming itchy. After you have scratched them, you start to notice your arm pits, hair, and waistband are itching.

The more you scratch, the worse it gets. And at 5 am after a sleepless night you start to wonder....

What if it's lice?

After turning some more and scratching more, in your half awake state, you start to panic...
Must be a full blown infestation of fleas, nits, lice, and bugs!

Only after waking in a panic sweat do you see the real cause.
Nothing in the world makes you feel better to wake up and find the culprit: some briars and twigs intertwined in the sheets.
Disaster averted...
But why am I still itching.

Our work blocked certain websites from employees. They blocked gmail, facebook, myspace, and a few others in an effort to improve productivity.
Now all of our employees have smart phones to access all those sites at work. Not sure who is winning, or what the next step is.

New shorts

I just bought shorts. They came with an extra button. I had two thoughts:

1. Where am I supposed to put this that I won't forget?

Camping in my house

I love the outdoors. We tried to take the kids camping last year and it was a failure. We shoved everything into our car at 10pm and drove home.

While Bridget is in Texas, I am up here in Oregon finishing out my contract. Alone. No tv. No radio. I have been sleeping on a futon, and having a hot shower every day. I have also been living off of frosted mini wheats.

It feels like camping without the fire. Then I had my revelation: what I really like is fire.

Maybe my years in scouts and young men fostered my inner pyro! Camping has nothing to do with it.

Whitney's blunder

Few things can cause panic like a broken water line.

In our new house the fridge and water line were the wrong size. There was a cap on the valve and that should have been a BIG red flag.

But I am smart. Or so I thought.
I shut the valve off, and started to remove the cap. I noted the isolated drop of water. Soon only Victoria Falls can compare to the shear volume and pressure hitting me in the face, chest, and soaking the house.

The horror, the horror!
Water shooting across the room covering our still full cardboard moving boxes.

I ran out to the water intake valve and tried to shut it off. Either by sheer strength, adrenaline, or rust, I broke the valve at about 90% closed. This turned Victoria into Niagra.

Panic is not a strong enough word for what I felt as I watched all of my wife's possessions slowly sink into Lake Baker.

I mustered up, I somehow managed put the cap back on.

Well, plumbers charge more than doctors. But it is all now fixed. Everything is fine.

Course, I should have asked, maybe Bridget wanted an indoor pool.

Ideas from my move:
1. If they can make an antibacterial or anti-odor for shoe insoles, why can't they make them for armpits of shirts.
2. Degree deodorant is not strong enough for a man.
3. Penske needs to remove the governors on their trucks.
4. Truck airconditioners need to be stronger for those traveling through Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
5. There needs to be a good, strong, safe, sedative for kids while traveling (then for their parents afterward).
6. There should probably be a naturalization class for those of us expats moving to the Republic of Texas.

Almost to Texas

Eli and I have been having a ball. That is, when he is awake and rested. There hasn't been much if that going on this trip.
We are staying at the Hampton Inn. I have never stayed anywhere so nice. The bathroom floor (that Eli peed on) is marble. The bed and pillows are nicer than ours at home!
I feel well rested. Eli is still asleep. This hotel is the best thing between Grants Pass and Houston!

Moving day and broken leg

We had Eli over at a friends house and he hurt his leg on the tramp. So rather than packing, we went to daddy's work and met lots of daddy's friends. One kept asking if thus was the same kid with stitches, then asked Eli if he was safe at home... Sad times .
We move today. Eli broke his leg. No pool this summer.

Technology

When I got my first Cell Phone I thought, "This is pretty neat, but who thinks they are so important that they need to be in constant contact with the world?"

When I saw that you could text messages on a phone I thought, "This is a phone, why go back to pager technology? Just talk!"

When I saw you could take Pictures with a phone I thought, "Why would you want to take a low quality picture on a 1" screen? What possible use is there?"

When I saw that you could check your email I thought, "Well this makes my once a week trip to the computer pointless."

When I saw you could get the Internet on a phone I thought, "Not only will I now drop calls, I can drop my news feeds as well."

When I got my iPhone, I thought, "How did I ever live without all this cool cool technology!"

I still haven't figured out Facebook and find it weird, but man that iPhone is cool.

What a day we live in when you can watch movies on your phone, surf the Internet on your TV, and make phone calls from your computer. If you wanted to, you could have a computer and never leave your room, and have all groceries, food, take-out delivered without a phone call.

Moving

So for those who don't know: we are moving this week.

We have been pulling out empty boxes and filling them with our stuff, and we have a lot of it. I took a cardboard box and cut the top off to use as padding for a picture frame. Eli and Dora went immediately to the newly mangled box and claimed it for their own. They are calling it their boat and having a good time.

Eli's birthday party was last week. I gave him some presents. He has spent more time in that box than he has with the toys I got him.

I know what he is getting next year!

Bridget got me an SKS and let me sleep in for my birthday. Not sure which I value more with a newborn. I know which was more of a sacrifice for her!

Having kids is for the birds

The birds have it right.
1. They lay eggs. The mom poops out an egg then has time to get crap done and get back in shape before the egg hatches.
2. If someone else touches their baby, they have nothing to do with it. Sort of a "you touched it you bought it" mentality. (Somedays I think this is great.) It would keep other people from getting your baby sick. They might think first before getting close, knowing that if they handle your baby, they have to stay up taking care of it.
3. They feed their young by vomiting into their mouths. How is that good? You can eat whatever you want and not get those calories! My kids would be eating krispy kreme, milkshakes, twinkies, (And dad could help feed.)
4. They sit on their young. I am tempted to do that sometimes. How nice would it be if your kids were screaming at night and all you had to do was roll over?

Then again how do you chase a 3 year old across a store if he can fly?

Monte Holm

There was a man in Moses Lake when I was young by the name of Monte Holm. He owned the local scrapyard and steel company. I remember my dad taking us to sell some scrap metal, he gave me a Magnet and a Werther's candy.

In high school I needed some money for basketball camp and went around and gathered up old aluminum siphon tubes and sprinkler pipes. I took them into the salvage yard and Monte Holm gave me money for the aluminum. He pulled me aside and said, "It is easier to get money off of pipes than the siphon tubes." He was right, I think he was telling me to focus on larger items to make smaller loads.

I Probably shouldn't admit to this, but I know my dad doesn't read Blogs. I poked a couple of holes in some sprinkler pipe so that I could have a little more money..... I kind of feel bad about it now, but we switched from handlines to circle sprinklers soon anyway.

I just read Mr. Holm's autobiography. It is titled "Once a Hobo." It is found on amazon for about $17 and well worth the read, you will want to live more conservatively and be more generous to the homeless. What the book doesn't mention is that Mr Holm always gave candy to kids, and I think he was the richest man in Moses Lake when I was growing up.

Anyone can borrow my copy if they promise to return it.

Girl Names

For whatever reason people have been giving us Flack for naming our daughter Emerald. Some people think it is a boy name like Herald. First of all, Emerald is a gem. All gems are girls. Stones on the other hand could be boy names... Granite, river, igneous, basalt... never mind boys should not be named after rocks at all, or stones, or gems.

I have always gotten a lot of flack for my name. True, you meet more women than men with my name. In fact, I have never met someone of the same gender with my name, and yet so so so very many girls in college were named Whitney. I met a man named Allison at the gym. It reminded me of a Johnny Cash song "a boy named Sue"

Allison should be a boys name... Son of Alli!

There are a few things about this that Irk Me:

First of all, If you have a name like Allison, Leslie, or Whitney, and you are a dude, you have to own it, No nick names, no second names. Own it like that Julian I met, He was one tough Dude! No question about it.

Secondly, (and this is the big one) They now call a lot of these names "Unisex." What that junk does that mean? Your parents couldn't decide if you would be a boy or girl or they could only find one neutral name? It isn't like a baby gift where a green blanket covers both genders. No name should ever be Unisex. Declare dang it! I would rather have a girls name and be tough than a Uni name and, well, be Uni.

Thirdly, My name was a Man's name in the last century and a Girls name in this one, I am not sure what happened, I blame the democrats. All of my childhood grief could have been avoided if born 15 years earlier. Parents should plan ahead, unless you are naming your son "SUE" for a reason, try to make his childhood easier.

Eli Sayings

I use this Blog as a type of Journal. In December of every year we print it in book form, it is easier than a journal.

Anyway, Eli is Hilarious. Recently he has said the following:

ME: Eli when you get this big (hand gesture) we can go camping!

ELI: AH! Really!

ME: When you get this big (hand Higher) we can go Fishing!

ELI: YEAH!

ME: When you get this big (Hand A LOT Higher) we can go Hunting!

ELI: For Easter Eggs?! Yippee!

ME: Sure

(he comes back)

ELI: Do I still have Halitosis?

(I thought it was funny to teach him that word, now he brushes his teeth 5 times per day!)

(I over heard his prayers this morning at the breakfast table while I was feeding the baby)

ELI: Dear heavenly father, thank you for this food, thank you for my baby sister, thank you that I Jesus was a good man to teach us things, thank you that I had dreams about Spider man, name of Jesus Christ Amen.

(He was the only one downstairs, after his prayer, he yells up to me)

ELI: Dad, I blessed the food so you can eat too!

ELI: Then that means we can go to the gym!

ELI: Dada, I don't want a Yarnale to steal my toys!

ME: What?

ELI: I don't want a YarnALE to come steal my toys?

ME (not understanding): What is that?

ELI: A Yarnale is when a thing comes around and takes all the toys and sells them to people and then they have your old toys, I don't want that!

ME: OH, you mean a Yard Sale.

ELI: Yeah, don't let one come into our house please!

ME: I will see what I can do.

He has said some hilarious things recently about breast pumping, but I think it best to not repeat them!

Emerald is doing well, Dora is doing well. Surprisingly Dora and Eli are excited to help out. Dora always asks if she can "Hold it" to the baby and the bottle... I will try to write some of Dora's funny later.

Tuesday fun
